The Dragon Again colt Silver Dragon enjoyed the biggest payday of his young career as he scored an impressive come-from-behind victory in Friday night's $50,000 final of The Count B Pacing Series for 3-year-old colts and geldings at Woodbine Racetrack.
In what was an action-packed affair, driver Luc Ouellette took Silver Dragon off the gate early and watched as Valentowner left hard from post 10 and put up the first fraction of :26.4.
Round-one winner Pro Art got away second in the opening stanza, but then brushed to the front as the field raced to the half. That lead was short lived, however, as leg-two winner and betting favorite Neal Diamonique came rushing up to take command right at the half in :55.3.
Neal Diamonique continued to roll along on the front end and took the field past the third panel in 1:23.1 with Pro Art still sitting in second and Nanuets Z Tam advancing outside in third. At that point, Ouellette had his charge gearing up sixth on the outside.
The big third quarter took its toll on the leaders who began to tire. The backfield came to life with Classical Remedy closing well, but Silver Dragon was able to out step that rival to the finish to score narrowly in 1:52.1. Neal Diamonique was able to hold on for the show spot.
The victory for Silver Dragon was his third in just seven tries this season. Kevin McMaster trains the winner for owner David Ratchford of North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The colt boosted his career bankroll to just over $60,000.
White Birch Farm bred Silver Dragon, who is out of the Artsplace mare Fancy Art.
Last year's Count B Pacing Series was one of the early stepping stones for $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup winner Tell All. (Woodbine)
