Notable sophomores competed in John Simpson Memorials at The Red Mile Friday night, and two pacing fillies, Vaudeville Margie and Little Miss Dragon, were the fastest winners with 1:51.2 and 1:50.2 miles, respectively.
Vaudeville Margie, a filly by Western Hanover out of the Illinois champion Incredible Tillie, rallied wide through the homestretch to win, earning a new lifetime mark with her effort. In her previous start she had finihsed sixth behind Little Miss Dragon in the Nadia Lobell, but she had no problems beating her foes in her Simpson split.
Trainer Erv Miller co-owns Vaudeville Margie, who picked up her second win in 10 starts this season. Andy Miller handled the driving.
Little Miss Dragon, fresh off her 1:51 triumph in the Nadia Lobell, was raced off the pace for the first quarter, then driver John Campbell moved her to the outside and she had control of the race before the three-quarter mark. She then held off the late inside rally by U All BB to earn her third win in seven starts this year.
Noel Daley trains Little Miss Dragon, a filly by Dragon Again, for the Adam Victor & Son Stable.
Two divisions of Simpson Memorials for 3-year-old trotters were contested with the winners Bayside Volo (1:54.4), who cut the mile, and Rune (1:52.1), who rallied in the homestretch for the win for trainer Jimmy Takter and driver Marcus Johansson..
