Simpsons for 2YO colts

September 24, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The John Simpson Sr. Memorial for 2-year-old colt pacers was raced in three divisions on a very sloppy Red Mile after record rainfall over the past 48 hours. The fastest winner was Takeshigemichi, a son of The Panderosa, in 1:55.

Trainer Tony Mannino had a very good night, winning two of the three stakes. He sent out the consistent Real Desire colt All Due Respect for race seven in a field reduced to eight with the defection of Metro winner Yankee Skyscaper, a casualty of the conditions, and came away a 1:57 winner.

Mike Lachance had the assignment and gave the colt a patient steer, reserved in fifth through the early going then followed second over behind Active Trading until the stretch. Lachance tipped All Due Respect off the cover and he coasted to a two-length victory. Red Hot Yankee (Artsplace) had a close up trip and shook loose for second, Real Man (Real Desire) rallied from back for third.

Takeshigemichi (The Panderosa) was Mannino’s second stakes winner of the card for owner the Lightning Stable and driver Jody Jamison. Takeshigemichi left quickly from post four and let Ideal Vintage cross over for just a few steps before retaking the lead. Sailing along at an honest clip, Takeshigemichi never faced a challenge and finished wrapped up in a remarkable 1:55.3 for the conditions.

Ideal Vintage (Western Ideal) parlayed his gate speed into a pocket ride and held well for second. Booze Cruizin (Art’s Conquest) came a weak first over and stayed for third.

The first division saw Susan Oakes and Richard Phillips’ Western Hanover colt Tivoli Hanover hold on for a 2:00.1 win. Trained by Chris Oakes and driven by Jody Jamison, who made his trip worthwhile despite losing the drive he came in for when Yankee Skyscaper was scratched by taking the other two divisions, Tivoli Hanover took the lead past the quarter and was allowed to dawdle through the first three-quarters in 1:32.1 before sprinting home in 28 seconds. He dug in to hold off May June Character (Shady Character) by less than a length with Quick Settlement (Jenna’s Beach Boy) third. (Red Mile release)
