Hanover Shoe Farms’ Murray Brown has told harnessracing.com that the 3-year-old filly pacer Singnoevil Hanover, involved in a race accident at Harrah’s Chester on Sunday in the $150,000 Valley Forge consolation, came out of the incident with injuries that will likely end her racing career.
“Barring anything unforeseen, she’s going to live,” said Brown, who shares ownership of the daughter of The Panderosa with trainer Dan Altmeyer, Richard Kelson and Barry Walton. “She was injured badly. Her left knee was pretty much cut to the bone, needing 12 stitches inside and 17 outside. Her right ankle, (Altmeyer) felt that she had to have a broken bone, but she x-rayed clear.”
Driven by Mike Wilder, Singnoevil Hanover was sitting mid-pack on the inside in the final turn when the leading Dingle Bay, driven by Yannick Gingras, went on a break. Horses scattered behind, but Singnoevil Hanover, Melissa’s Fancy (driven by Corey Callahan) and betting favorite She’s A Fan (driven by Tim Tetrick) took the brunt of the action. Both Singnoevil Hanover and Melissa’s Fancy fell to the track, and when the sulky wheel of She’s A Fan caught another horse, Tetrick was catapulted from the bike.
Dingle Bay was subsequently disqualified and unplaced for causing the accident. The drivers all walked away from the accident and there was no report of any significant injuries sustained by the other horses involved. Although it is little consolation, Singnoevil Hanover was awarded $2,500 in purse money since the final official order consisted of four horses. A four-time winner last year, including on the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes circuit, but winless in 12 attempts this year, Singnoevil Hanover has career earnings of $131,706.
“She’ll have another x-ray on Thursday,” said Brown. “But (Altmeyer) thinks she’s going to make it. Whether she races again is highly questionable. But I don’t care. I’m very relieved.”
Ironically, this was the second year in a row that “Super Stakes Sunday” at Harrah’s Chester was marred by a race accident. Last year, drivers Tetrick, Brian Sears, Cat Manzi and Eric Goodell were involved in a spill that resulted in Goodell and Manzi being taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Goodell was released later that evening with bruised ribs while Manzi remained overnight with a broken clavicle and two broken ribs.
