Slaley wins on day better suited for ducks than horses

Slaley made her first start at Monticello Raceway a winning on when the sophomore daughter of Grinfromeartoear  defeated the best distaff pacers on the grounds when she copped the weekly $10,400 Preferred Pace for fillies and mares in 1:58.1 over a soggy racetrack on Monday afternoon.

In a day better suited for ducks than racehorses, Mark Beckwith guided Slaley to a wire-to-wire triumph over Park’em Out Missy and driver Brent Holland as the rains kept pouring down.

After starting from post position four, Beckwith sent the Joe Anderson-trained Slaley for the lead which the filly gained before the quarter pole as the timer flashed :28.4. From there Beckwith kept the pedal to the metal and Slaley made every pole a winning one en route to a two-length victory. Third place went to Vivacious Raider in rein to Jordan Stratton.

It marked the 10th seasonal victory for Slaley who owns a lifetime record of 1:53.2 taken at Flamboro Downs earlier this season. The filly, who paid just $3 for win, is owned in Canada by Gerrie Tucker and Ian Fromawitz. With her triumph Slaley now has a seasonal bankroll in excess of $113,000.

As the rains poured down an oddity happened in the first race on the card when the mobile starting gate stalled just before the starting judge was ready to fold the wings and release the field which caused some horses to be interfered with at the start. Due to the unfortunate happening the presiding judge declared the race "no contest" and all wagering monies were refunded. On the plus side, no horse or driver was hurt as a result of the mishap. A  back-up gate was brought out for the rest of the program. (Monticello)
