Margarita Momma won the first of three $86,400 divisions of the Bluegrass for 3-year-old filly trotters Friday afternoon at The Red Mile, posting a 1:53.4 clocking over a track rated "sloppy" after heavy rains deluged Lexington early in the morning and again early on the race card.
Driven by Ron Pierce, Margarita Momma moved three wide around the final turn and the daughter of Yankee Glide outclosed her competition down the middle of the stretch. Sirenuse finished second for David Miller, with Dream Buy and George Brennan third.
The win was the fourth of the year for Margarita Momma, increasing her seasonal earnings to nearly $320,000 for owners Jorgen Jahre Jr. and trainer Jan Johnson.
"I'm extremely happy," said Jahre afterward. "She's a good filly. She had some physical problems which took a long time to heal. She's now back in form and we're looking forward to the Breeders Crown."
Although Broadway Schooner had an open-lengths lead at the :27.4 first quarter and held the top spot in the seven-horse field throughout, she could not hold off the fast-closing Southwind Wasabi in the second split as that one charge home first in 1:54.1.
Mike Lachance drove the daughter of Windsong's Legacy for trainer Chuck Sylvester, who shares ownership with Neal Goldman, Margaret Dey and Jerry Silva. The win was her fifth of the year in13 starts, increasing her seasonal earnings to more than $465,000.
Windsong Soprano was singing in the rain--literally--as she won the third division in 1:55.4 as a driving rainstorm pelted the track. Driven by Mike Lachance, Windsong Soprano stayed game through the stretch as she fought off a pocket-sitting Seaside and David Miller by about a neck. Musical Mystery was third for Pierce.
Bob McIntosh trains the winning daughter of Windsong's Legacy for owner Lothlorien (Susan Grange). The win was her ninth of the year in 14 starts, boosting her 2009 earnings past the $433,000 mark and career bankroll to more than $657,000.
