Slots plan at Bangor

According to a story in the Portland Press Herald, Penn National Gaming, which operates Bangor Raceway, plans to renovate a well-known restaurant adjacent to the track and install 475 slot machines there. Penn National bought Miller's Restaurant for $3.8 million and plans to open the parlor in November or December. Also, Penn Nation plans to relocate an off-track betting parlor to the grandstand at Bangor Raceway.



Penn National is able to install the slot machines at the restaurant because the referendum passed in 2003 allows for the addition of the machines at sites within 2,000 feet of Maine's two harness tracks. Penn National still plans to build a new facility for 1,500 machines, but no exact date has been given as to when construction on that building would begin.



Penn National still needs final approval for its state gambling license, which was put on hold until the legislature passed the bill making certain information confidential. Licenses must also be obtained by the slot machine distributors, monitoring company and employees.
