Smith honored at Plainridge

Loyalty was rewarded Tuesday at Plainridge Racecourse as the curtain came down on the 2006 season as trainer-driver Cathy Smith, who trucked a couple of horses some 300 miles round-trip from her home in Shapleigh, Maine to Plainridge each week, was awarded the track's President's Award by COO Gary T. Piontkowski.

"Her weekly journey took her through three states and she passed two other harness tracks along the way, Scarborough Downs in Maine, and Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H.," Piontkowski noted. "Her loyalty is remarkable, especially when you consider the cost factors involved in traveling some 16,000 miles during the meet's 100-day meeting."

Smith is a member of the New England Amateur Drivers Club and is no slouch during a race. She's been to post 90 times at Plainridge and has recorded 10 wins, eight seconds, and 14 third-place finishers. (Plainridge)
