Somebeachsomewhere didn't match his world-record clocking from last week but the 3-year-old colt pacer cruised once again to an impressive victory in the first of two $293,000 Tattersalls divisions Saturday at The Red Mile. Driven by Paul MacDonell, Somebeachsomewhere moved from fourth to first shortly after the opening :26.3 quarter and then led the rest of the way through fractions of :53.4 and 1:21.2 before closing out the mile with a final quarter of :26.2 to seal the victory.
A world champion at both two and three, Somebeachsomewhere easily held off runner-up Lonestar Legend and David Miller to post his 11th win of the year in 12 starts. Dali and Luc Ouellette was third.
In the winner's circle afterward, trainer Brent MacGrath, who shares ownership of the son of Mach Three as part of the Schooner Stables from Nova Scotia, announced that Hanover Shoe Farms has purchased an interest in the colt and will stand him next year at its farm in Hanover, Pa.
The win was Somebeachsomewhere's sixth straight as he increased his seasonal earnings to $1,750,003. He has career earnings of $2,523,299.
Art Official, who upset SBSW in the $1.1 million Meadowlands Pace, won the second $293,000 Tattersalls split with a 1:48.3 effort for driver Ron Pierce. Pierce moved Art Official from third just past the opening quarter to brush to the lead and then led through the rest of the distance, reaching the halfway station in :53.3 and three-quarters in 1:21.4.
Art Official closed out his mile with a final quarter of :26.4 as he easily reached the wire first ahead of runner-up Lisfinny and David Miller, with Mystery Chase and Brian Sears third.
The win was the 13th of the year for the son of Art Major who didn't draw into the same division as SBSW both weeks of Grand Circuit action in Lexington. Although MacGrath has indicated SBSW is heading to Yonkers for the Messenger later this month, trainer Joe Seekman has said he was leaning toward sending his charge to New York.
James and Joyce Jesk's Sawgrass Farms owns Art Official, who went past the $1.5 million mark in 2008 earnings and the $1.6 million level for his career.
