Somebeachsomewhere sets stakes mark

Jody Jamieson took two of the three divisions of the Champlain for 2-year-old pacing colts at Mohawk Saturday night, scoring with Legacy N Diamonds and Roberts Rage, but the third split went to Metro champ Somebeachsomewhere in a stakes-record time of 1:51. The previous mark of 1:51.2 was held by Sir Luck.

Somebeachsomewhere was sent to the lead early on the backstretch, taking command from Upfront Hannahsboy, who secured the front with a :26.3 first quarter. Somebeachsomewhere was tested on the final turn by Weekend Gambler, driven by Ron Pierce, but he pulled away to an open-lengths victory with a :26 last quarter.

In the first of three $113,883 divisions, second favorite Lyons Geoff, driven by David Miller, took the early lead through an easy first fraction of :28, but by the three-eighths mark he had relinquished it to a charging Legacy N Diamonds. Legacy N Diamonds, a colt by The Panderosa, widened his advantage to three lengths around the far turn and then cruised home to an easy victory in 1:52.4.

The 6-5 favorite Keystone Horatio, with Randy Waples at the lines, got stuck in traffic. A late rush gave Romantic Thriller (Steve Condren) the place ticket, and Lyons Geoff hung on for third.

Jamieson says soundness issues have held back the promising Legacy N Diamonds until recently. “With any 2 year old racing on this track, they come in and they get a couple of starts under their belts, and they’ve got to go fast and they get a little sore. He’s got the same problem as anybody else. Tonight he was good though. When I moved him in the first turn he just grabbed right hold of the bit and was pretty good right to the wire.”

Roberts Rage, a son of Artsplace out of Michelle’s Revenge, won his split by open lengths in 1:52.2. Also trained  and co-owned by Carl Jamieson, Roberts Rage now has three wins, two seconds and a third in seven starts this year. He failed to make the cut for the Metro final, finishing fourth, but bounced back to win the Metro consolation in 1:52.2.
