Some support for casinos at Meadowlands

According to a story on newjersey.com, at least a couple of New Jersey legislators are in favor of putting a full-fledged casino at the Meadowlands. They voiced their support for such a plan at a panel discussion presented by the Meadowlands Liberty Convention and Visitors Bureau in Lyndhurst.

The story said that New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority chairman Carl Goldberg, a real estate executive, was asked at the conference how attractive the Meadowlands Sports Complex could be to possible casino developers. “The number is almost incalculable,” Goldberg said. “This would be the most valuable parcel of real estate for the expansion of gaming, maybe not only in the U.S., but the world.”

State Senator Jennifer Beck, who represents Monmouth County, where several horse farms are located, also expressed support for a casino at t he Meadowlands and noted New Jersey's passive posture while gaming was added along the state's borders.

“There has been a great expansion of gaming in a five-state region, and the state of New Jersey did nothing, absolutely nothing,” Beck said. “The Atlantic City casinos did nothing. The horseracing industry did nothing. And, as a result, we’ve seen a decline across the board of gaming in the state of New Jersey.”

Earlier this month incoming Gov. Chris Christie's transition team issued a report on horse racing and suggested the horse racing industry be downsized in order to survive in the state.
