Soph rallies at Hoosier

Eden Burst came from last at the top of the stretch to win the $6,000 second leg of the Tubby Trimble Series Wednesday, May 16, at Hoosier Park. Roaring from the outside with driver Don Irvine Jr., the 3 year old paced the mile in 1:56.2, just a tick off of his career best. The race was a non-betting event.

“He (Eden Burst) likes to close from off of the pace in the stretch,” said Irvine. “He has a good kick in him. The plan was to lay back and pick up some cover at the beginning of the race. He raced the same way last week, but threw his head and made a break.”

Eden Burst had to get the job done from the back in the compact field of six. Starting from post position five, Irvine sat patiently while the fractions were set up by Lickcreek Louie and driver Andy Shetler, who cut quarters of :27.4, :58.4, and 1:28.

Lickcreek Louie continued to stay on the lead every step of the way until late in the lane. From sixth place, Eden Burst came charging on the outside with authority as he closed with the quickest final panel of :27.1, going on to the victory. Hoosier Alibi and driver Joe Essig Jr. got up to finish second. Lickcreek Louie held on to finish third.

“I would have liked to have seen some more speed before the half,” said Irvine. “The wind was pretty strong coming down the backstretch. There have been a lot of cheap halves because of the wind.”

Eden Burst is now two for four in 2007 with one third-place performance, which came in the first round of the Indiana Sire Stakes. The son of Safety Patrol has earned over $20,600 in his career for owners Lavern Hostetler and David Bontrager. Bobby Brower trains the Indiana-sired bay colt. (Hoosier Park)
