Meadowlands Pace champion Southwind Lynx brushed to the front early in the mile for Tim Tetrick and went on to win the second $121,000 Oliver Wendell Holmes division in 1:48.3 Saturday. Always A Virgin and Brian Sears won the first split in 1:49.1. When the gate folded Watta Hotshot and Sears rocketed to the front from post six. The Artiscape gelding would occupy the top spot until Tetrick pulled from the pylons with Southwind Lynx, moving him from third to the lead by the :54.2 first half. Tell All tipped first up racing to the three-quarter mile mark marker and looked to reel in the leader in the stretch. However, the Real Desire colt was unable to make up ground, locking in Watta Hotshot in the process. Southwind Lynx would go on to win in a lifetime best performance. Despite being locked in behind the winner, Watta Hotshot nabbed second as Tell All was third. Trainer George Teague and Tetrick once again teamed up for a victory, the fourth in seven starts for the Real Artist sophomore. Southwind Lynx is owned by K & R Racing LLC and Teague Inc. Steering widest of all in the lane, the duo was able to catch and pass Artriverderci and John Campbell, who finished third behind Kinetic Yankee. Running Book took command early from the fourth post as Artriverderci, lining up on the outside in the field of eight, fired for the gate for Campbell. The Western Ideal colt continued to roll under Campbell’s guidance, taking the point on the way to a :54.2 opening half. Sutter Hanover and David Miller began the first-over charge, flushing Running Book from the pocket seat as the field raced to the three-quarter pole. Sears and Always A Virgin followed Sutter Hanover. At the top of the stretch Sears flipped off his cover and began to make up ground on the outside. The Joe Hollaway-trained colt grabbed the lead and pulled away for his fifth win in nine starts this season. Kinetic Yankee, third along the rail through most of the mile, raced second for Andy Miller. Bred and co-owned by Roll The Dice Stable with Bluewood Stable and Val D’Or Farms, Always A Virgin now possesses career earnings of more than $345,000. Click here for the video of the race.
