Southwind Tempo on the verge of millionairess status

March 21, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Southwind Tempo maneuvered around tiring horses and soared down the stretch to win the $136,400 Overbid on Friday night at the Meadowlands.

Driver John Campbell positioned Southwind Tempo sixth on the rail and elected to follow Western Graduate as she moved first-up into the wind.  However, Western Graduate’s bid quickly halted and Campbell had to swing Southwind Tempo three-wide to get around her mid-way down the backstretch.  From there, Southwind Tempo closed in a brisk 26.3 seconds to post a length victory in 1:51.  Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, she paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10.

Street Dancer saved ground behind the pacesetters and closed along the pylons to finish second.  My Little Dragon cut the middle fractions and held on for third.

“She’s excellent off of cover,” Campbell said of Southwind Tempo.  “She’s got a real high turn of speed.  I was hoping I had enough horse to make up the ground, but I was sure she was going to give me a good run.  I certainly would have liked the cover to take me around the turn but it just didn’t work out that way.  But, when I tipped her, she was pacing hard and she was able to sustain that right to the wire.  She’s very gifted and we just hope she can stay this sharp for the rest of the year.”

Southwind Tempo, the 2007 Three-Year-Old Filly Pacer of the Year, is perfect in three starts this season.  Kevin Lare trains the 4-year-old daughter of Bettor’s Delight, who was recently acquired in a million-dollar deal by Jerry Silva of Long Beach, N.Y.  Southwind Tempo is now just $7,246 shy of the $1 million mark in earnings.  She has won 22 of 27 career starts and $992,754.

“I don’t think it really matters whose barn she’s in and the price that was paid for her will tell you that she’s a great horse,” noted Kevin Lare who took over training duties on the mare from Steve Elliott.  “I hope she keeps it going, without a doubt.” (Meadowlands)
