Southwind Tempo, Western Graduate take Jugette elims

September 19, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Southwind Tempo led wire to wire to win the first of two Jugette eliminations Wednesday at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds, with the 3-year-old daughter of Bettor's Delight holding on by a long neck over Liberty Skiberty in 1:52. The time was a national season's mark and just three-fifths of a second off the world record.

Tim Tetrick sent Southwind Tempo to the front with David Miller tucking Liberty Skiberty right behind. John Campbell tried to find the three hole with Checkouttheview, but had to duck into fourth behind the Greg Grismore-driven Mystical Dreamer. But it was Campbell who pulled first-over, followed by Before Dawn and Tony Hall.

Southwind Tempo cut fractions of :26.4, :56 and 1:24.3, and as Checkouttheview began to tire, it opened up room for Miller to take aim on the leader with Liberty Skiberty. But the bid fell short as Southwind Tempo closed out her mile with a final quarter of :27.2. Before Dawn finished third and Mystical Dream was fourth, earning spots in the second heat.

The win was Southwind Tempo's 15th in 18 starts this year. She is owned by Toby Lynch and Wayne Chrebet and trained by Steve Elliott.

Western Graduate parlayed a second-over trip into a world record-equaling 1:51.2 victory in the second Jugette elimination. Driver Yannick Gingras rallied his charge three wide around the final turn to rush past Isabella Blue Chip, who had led through the opening three quarters of :26.4, :55.2 and 1:23.1.

Isabella Blue Chip, driven by David Miller, repelled the first-over challenge by Current Hanover and Ron Pierce, but the battle took its toll on the filly as she tired to fourth. Elusive Prey rallied late to get second, a length and three-quarters behind the winner, for George Brennan, edging out the Dave Palone-driven Me And My Baby.

Mickey Burke trains Western Graduate for owners Burke, Cherichello, Leon and Karr. The win was her fifth of the year in 15 starts.

Although Isabella Blue Chip, the reigning divisional champ, finished fourth and earned a spot in the second heat, trainer George Teague Jr. decided to scratch her from the contest. Last week Teague told harnessracing.com Isabella Blue Chip had been battling feet problems throughout the year.
