Spacie Jessie, a 6-year-old Space Shuttle mare out of the Unique Concept mare Chip O The Ram, was first-over in a short five-horse field, due to two scratches, and gamely won a close three-horse photo in 1:59.2, to register her sixth win of the year in the $9,000 featured Filly and Mares Open Pace for owner-driver James M. Dunn, at Buffalo Raceway Friday night.
Dunn and Spacie Jessie, ($16.20), settled in fourth in the field of five, as eventual third-place finisher, and last week's Open winner, Party News (Ray Fisher Jr.) set all the fractions in the race, :30, 1:00.2 and 1:30.4. Taking all the air on the outside down the backside the second time, Spacie Jessie used a :28.3 last quarter mile to edge second place finisher Jezzabell Hotspur (Ken Holliday) by a nose at the wire.
"When she gets her legs out in front of her, like she did tonight, she's very tough to beat," said Dunn. "Being first-over in slow fractions against these horses is no picnic, but she's as game as they come." Trained by Ron Beback Jr., the $4,500 share of the winning purse put Spacie Jessie's 2009 bankroll at $29,570 and $133,199 lifetime.(Buffalo)
