Special T Rocks pulled a mile surprise winning the $36,000 Preferred/Handicap Pace at Dover Downs Monday, while Flying Instructor, It's Outta Here and Bail Money won Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund preliminaries.
Daryl Bier became a two-time owner- trainer-driver winner, piloting Special T Rocks to a1:51.3 triumph in the week's top pace, out-legging Bondy N and Ron Pierce to the fnish line. Early leader Warning Zone, with David Miller aboard, was the show finisher. Custard The Dragon (Montrell Teague), one of last season's top sophomore pacers, made his 4-year-old debut and finished fourth.
Bier, who owns Special T Rocks with Forrest Bartlett and JoAnn Dombeck, drove theRocknroll Hanover-Ladys Special 4-year-old gelding to his sixth win of the year in 11 starts with two seconds. An early season standout, winning the Clyde Hirt Final and finishing second in the Exit 16W Final at the Meadowlands, Special T Rocks has now earned $120,930 in 2012 and $198,644 lifetime.
CatchmecullenA, after being close all season long in the Open class, finally made it to the winner's circle, closing strongly for Tim Curtin to win the $27,500 Open Pace in1:52.2. The Christian Cullen-Kimrena gelding is trained by Les Givens for Joshua Parker and Nanticoke Racing Inc. Winsmith Art (John Wagner), who showed early speed, finished second. Higher And Higher (Daryl Bier), the only mare in the event, raced big from post 7 but had to settle for third place.
In a $19,500 male winners-over pace, Save Me A Place gave trainer Wayne Givens and owners Niel Gargiulo and Legacy Racing Of Del. a double when Corey Callahan found room between horses to get up in 1:53.2. Stand By Cam (David Miller) was second with High Joltage (Ben Stafford Jr.), the third finisher.
Tim Tetrick steered Fool Of Ideas to his fourth win in his last five races to win another $19,500 4&5-Year-Old pace. Fool Of Ideas reduced his lifetime mark to 152 for KevinSwitzer and Kathleen Mofield. The Mike Horsey trainee was followed across the finish line by Bubbie Boy (Daryl Bier), whose second-place finish ended his two-race winning streak. (Dover Downs)
