Spoiled Beach edges Terroronthebeach in series opener

Less than two weeks after Beach Towel died in New Zealand, fillies out of mares sired by the 1990 Horse of the Year swept the top two positions in the $22,500 opening round of the Blossom Series Wednesday night at the Meadowlands. Spoiled Beach crossed the wire first over Terroronthebeach in the 1:54.1 mile contested over a “sloppy” track and through rainy conditions.

Spoiled Beach, a daughter of Camluck, was driven by Ron Pierce to the victory. The filly was parked at every call but was still able to take the lead in the stretch before holding off the George Brennan-driven Terroronthebeach by a neck. Wildflower Hanover and Brian Sears finished third.

Linda Toscano trains the winning Spoiled Beach for the Enviro Stables. The filly is out of the Beach Towel mare Beach Dancer p,3, 1:54.1 ($155,632), the winner of the 1996 New Jersey Sire Stakes final for 2-year-old filly pacers at Freehold. Spoiled Beach won for the third time in five starts this year in her first appearance since finishing second in the $76,000 Tender Loving Care final Feb. 20 at the Meadowlands.

Second-place finisher Terroronthebeach is trained by Mark Harder for owner Bulletproof Enterprises. She is out of the Beach Towel mare Beach Guest p, 1:51.3 ($182,801), a sibling to five other $100,000-plus performers.

The second round of the Blossom Series is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 8, with the $65,000 final scheduled for April 15.
