Undefeated Metro Pace champion Sportswriter leads a list of 11 entries for the $700,000 Breeders Crown for 2-year-old male pacers on October 24 at Woodbine Racetrack. No elimination race will be necessary. Joining Sportswriter in the field are All Speed Hanover, Kyle Major, Malicious, OK Commander, Payne’s Landing, Rockin Image, Shoobee’s Place, Urgent Action, Whackamole Hanover, and World Of Rocknroll.

Sportswriter won the million-dollar Metro Pace on Sept. 5 at Mohawk Racetrack by two lengths in a world-record 1:49.2 performance. The Artsplace-Precious Beauty colt is driven by Mark MacDonald and trained by Casie Coleman. His other wins this year include divisions of the Champlain and Nassagaweya stakes.

He is owned by Steve Calhoun and West Wins Stable and has earned $631,080.

“He’s very good,” Coleman said about Sportswriter. “He hasn’t raced since the Champlain so I was hoping (for an elimination race). I qualified him last week and I’m planning on going again this week. I’d love to get a race under his belt before the final, but if not then I’ll qualify the horse again probably on Friday.

“I trained both Sportswriter and (Breeders Crown 2-year-old filly pacer entrant) Western Silk this morning. They both trained absolutely great. They’re both healthy and sound and feeling good, so hopefully we can have a little bit of luck.”

Malicious has won eight of 10 races this year and banked $288,541 for trainer/co-owner Ian Moore. Malicious’ wins include a division of the Nassagaweya. He was third in the Governor’s Cup and fourth in the Metro.

Moore shares ownership of Malicious (Bettor’s Delight-Silky) with RG McGroup and former NHL star Serge Savard–the same connections that found success with standout pacer Shadow Play.

Rockin Image is coming off wins in divisions of the Bluegrass and International Stallion Stakes at the Red Mile in Lexington. The son of Rocknroll Hanover-Kikikatie has won three of seven starts and earned U.S.$229,636 for trainer Jimmy Takter and owner Lothlorien stable.

POut On A Show, who is seven for seven this year including a win in the She’s A Great Lady, is among 16 entries for the Breeders Crown for 2-year-old filly pacers at Woodbine Racetrack. Two $25,000 elimination races will be held Friday, with the top five finishers in each division advancing to the $610,000 final on Oct. 24.

Also entered are A And Gs Princess, Cannae Cammie, Casino Nights, Dancin Barefoot, Fancy Filly, Full Picture, Higher And Higher, Native Doll, Panagler, Siri Hanover, Slimsplace, Ticket To Rock, Wenditions, and Western Silk.

Put On A Show (Rocknroll Hanover-Stienam’s Place) has earned $573,629 for owners Richard Young and Craig Henderson. In addition to the She’s A Great Lady, her victories include divisions of the Eternal Camnation, Bluegrass, and International Stallion stakes. She is trained by Chris Ryder and driven by Jody Jamieson.

Higher And Higher and Fancy Filly finished second and third, respectively, in the She’s A Great Lady.

The third-place finish for Fancy Filly represents her only loss this year. She has won nine of 10 races and earned $506,405 for trainer George Teague Jr., who owns the Western Hanover-Fanciful Hanover filly with Only Money Inc. and Ted Gewertz. Fancy Filly’s wins include the Three Diamonds and a division of the Eternal Camnation.

Higher And Higher, trained by Tracy Brainard for Bulletproof Enterprises, has won four of six races and earned $327,619. The daughter of Western Terror-Pro Bowl Best is coming off wins in the Bluegrass and International Stallion stakes.

Casino Nights (Western Ideal-Can Du River) also won a division of the International Stallion and was second in the Three Diamonds. She has won four of eight starts and $225,982 for VAE LLC.

Western Silk (Western Terror-Extemporaneous) has won three consecutive races, including two Ontario Sire Stakes Gold finals. She is trained by Casie Coleman, who owns the filly with Tom Hill.
