Although trainer Casie Coleman told harnessracing.com a few weeks ago that she was contemplating entering the reigning Dan Patch and O’Brien award winner Sportswriter in this Saturday night’s $500,000 Hoosier Cup at Hoosier Park, the two-time O’Brien Award-winning trainer has instead opted to enter the colt in an overnight that same night at Mohawk Racetrack.
Sportswriter, who has three qualifiers under his belt in preparation for his 3-year-old campaign—including a 1:51.4 victory on May 20—has drawn post five in the $24,000(C) race that is slated as the fifth event on the program. Although it is expected that Brian Sears will drive the son of Artsplace in this year’s major stakes, Mark MacDonald, who directed the colt in all eight of his starts in 2009, has gotten the call Saturday from Coleman.
Also in the field is Kyle Major, the recent third-place finisher in the $220,000 Berry’s Creek final. Steve Condren has been named to drive the son of Art Major for trainer Shawn Robinson from post eight.
Condren is also listed to drive Nebupanezzar in the race, with the 2008 O’Brien Award winner as a freshman making just his second start of the year after being sidelined due to injury all of 2009. Now four, the No Pan Intended gelding was the richest 2 year old of 2008 under the tutelage of recent Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame electee Bob McIntosh.
