It’s been nearly 21 years since the Standardbred Retirement Foundation helped its first horse, and three years since the move to the farm. Housing 25-30 horses at a time made adoptions and youth programs ideal. But in five months all must be packed and ready to go as the farm is being sold and SRF has nowhere to go. “Ideally, staying in the south central part of New Jersey would be most advantageous as we have wonderful volunteers,” explained Paula Campbell. “Drs. Bokman, Hogan, and Fox are key to our work, their help is gratis,” explained Dom Nawrot, SRF’s trainer and caretaker. SRF must consider all options. One would think that in this weak real estate market finding a new home to use or lease would not be such an issue, but nothing at all has come our way. SRF is hard pressed for time and must consider all possibilities. The 25-plus usable acres is a little tight and many horses are still boarded off the farm. The indoor arena makes year round training ideal and keeps the youth programs active. “Managing this large number of horses all at boarding facilities is not an option,” explained Judy Bokman, an SRF Board Member. “It was very difficult to provide the right care and situation for every horse when we had less than half the number we do now. Even with sophisticated databases of detailed information on every horse at every location, it is overwhelming. We would have to scale back until a suitable facility can be found.” It is an emotional time for all touched by SRF’s mission--owners, trainers, the horses, staff, volunteers and the kids. Whether a gift of land comes wrapped in a box or in a lease, SRF needs a home.
