Stables wait to ship north

The sun was shining brightly on the backstretch at The Red Mile this morning, just as it did on many of the mornings during the recently completed Grand Circuit meet. Today, however, there was a distinct difference in not only the number of horsemen still stabled at the track, but also the air temperature. Last week the temperature was in the 60s and 70s. At 8:30 this morning a local radio station reported the temperature was 32 degrees with a wind-chill of 26 degrees.

Most stables have shipped out. But a few with horses scheduled to race in Canada in either the Breeders Crown or the beginning of the Classic Series, kept those horses in Lexington instead of shipping back east to their home bases and then shipping again to Canada.

The Jimmy Takter Stable has the largest contingent with 12 horses, all of which will be shipping to Canada Monday. The Noel Daley Stable will ship the five horses it left behind to Canada on Sunday. Six of the nine horses in the Ron Gurfein Stable will head north of the border on Tuesday. Two each from Don Swick’s Royal Wire Products Stable and the Dewayne Minor Stable will also ship north for the Breeders Crown.

One trainer who is shipping in to The Red Mile is Bruce Riegle. He is permanently moving to Lexington from New Jersey for the winter training season.
