Freshman colt pacers took center stage at Indiana Downs Friday, July 31 as four $25,000 Indiana Sires Stakes divisions were offered. Royal Art colt Ombre Art won the fastest of the four splits with a 1:56.3 effort while Third Straight colts Dublo Six and McStraight swept two others.
Favorite Ombre Art and driver Ricky Macomber took command after the quarter and cruised to a nearly three-length victory in the opening split. T T Tiger raced second and Our Killer Watt was third. Owned and trained by Ewell Binkley, the colt collected his second career victory. The time shaved two-fifths of a second off his previous best.
Dublo Six and Dan Shetler used a rail trip to their advantage and nipped favorite Harvard’s Z Tam at the wire by a head to take the second $25,000 division in 1:57.2. C Dee’s Thunder finished third. Trained by Steve Livingston for the Big Hat Stables, the gelding was sent off as second choice. The victory was his second of the season. Dublo Six has yet to miss the board in five starts.
Marty Mike won his debut for trainer Dan Bowermaster, capturing the third division with an impressive four-length romp. Piloted by Jeff Cullipher, the Mark Johnathan gelding stopped the clock in 1:57. Grand Revelation paced second while Cyclone Ashore rounded out the trifecta. Bowermaster owns Marty Mike in partnership with Alroy Chow of Jacksonville, Fla.
Jackie and Sally Jo Richard’s McStraight claimed the fourth and final $25,000 division Friday night on the strength of a 1:56.4 performance. The Dan Perdue-trained colt notched his third win in four starts this season, holding off favorite Powerful Pete by three parts of a length. K C Colt raced third.
