Star filly trotter Timeless Winner found dead

Delaware-based trainer George Teague told harnessracing.com Friday morning that he found his 2-year-old filly trotter Timeless Winner dead in the field early Thursday, two days before she was slated to go postward as the 2-1 morning-line choice in the $194,550 Matron final at Dover Downs.

“She stays out in the field because she’s always had an issue of tying up. I went to feed her breakfast yesterday morning at five o’clock and she was dead,” said Teague, who shared ownership of the daughter of Broadway Hall with his sister, Brenda, Rodney Mitchell Inc., Kenneth Mitchell and Robert Myers.

A $35,000 yearling purchase (sold as The Two Spot), Timeless Winner had a record of 11-3-5-1, earnings of $292,054 and a mark of 1:55.1 set in an International Stallion Stakes division at The Red Mile in early October. The filly was trained her first three starts by Myers before Teague took over the conditioning in August.

Timeless Winner’s other two victories came in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes contest at Harrah’s Chester and an Oakville division at Mohawk. She was heading into the Matron final Saturday off a narrow second-place finish in her elim as the betting choice, an effort that followed runner-up efforts in both her Goldsmith elim and $679,068 final at Woodbine.

“It is really disappointing because I thought she had a real good chance Saturday, and anything could happen in the Breeders Crown because she was definitely worthy of that,” said Teague. “She was definitely a heck of a nice filly.”

Teague added that a necropsy will be done to determine Timeless Winner’s cause of death.
