Star Of India blew past her more heralded stablemate and went on to capture a division of the Kat N Mouse, a series for 3-year-old pacing fillies, on Friday at The Meadows. Palazzo Princess took the other $15,000 division in the series’ opening leg.
Although Star Of India was coupled with Amazon Queen as a Ron Burke-trained entry, the latter probably drew much of the 1-5 support based on her flashy, 1:53.4 maiden-breaker on Mar. 16. But when Amazon Queen struggled to reach the lead at the three-quarter pole, Star of India and driver Eric Ledford powered by.
The daughter of Real Desire-Diamond Star Halo scored in 1:54, 1 3/4 lengths better than Western Six, while Amazon Queen saved show. Sylvia Burke, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, JJK Stables, and Wall Bros. Stable own Star Of India. It was one of five wins on the 14-race card for Ledford.
Palazzo Princess, a daughter of Jate Lobell-Hawaiian Exotica, went wire to wire for Aaron Merriman, trainer Paul Kennedy Jr., and owner Paint Creek Farms, prevailing in 1:54.1. Outstanding BB was 2 3/4 lengths back, in second, with My Lady Bonnard third.
In the $25,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred pace, Natalie turned in a front-end victory for Mike Wilder, in 1:51.4, fastest mile this year by a 4-year-old mare on a five-eighths mile track. Osborne’s Gypsy closed well to be second, by 1 1/2 lengths, while Autumn Magic finished third.
Kevin McDermott trains Natalie, a 4-year-old daughter of Jenna’s Beach Boy-Armbro Redwood, for Fran Azur, and McDermott also conditions Autumn Magic. Both McDermott fillies reached the Apr. 2 Jersey Girls Series final at the Meadowlands. (The Meadows)
