Steamin Rosie didn’t mind the raindrops nor the sloppy racing surface in her Maywood Park debut. The 3-year-old Prairie Meadows invader drew off to post a 2 1/4-length victory in Thursday night’s $12,500 BG’s Abbie stake for state-bred sophomore trotting fillies with a career-best time of 2:01.4.
Steamin Rosie left hard from the advantageous one slot but had to drop into the pocket when the 50-1 longshot My Irish Molly (Mike Brink) went all out from the two slot to get command. Driver Josh Sutton hustled Rainbow Victoria out from the outside seven slot and grabbed the three hole.
After My Irish Molly took the field to a :29.1 first quarter, Rainbow Victoria was out and rolling, passing the early pacesetter and was on top by a half-length at the :59.2 half. Widger soon after moved Steamin Rosie out and the 5-2 second choice had to race first up through a :30.2 third quarter, however she had no problem zipping past Rainbow Victoria and had plenty left to hold off a late challenge by the place horse Cardinal Speedy.
The 7-5 favorite Chugwater Gal (Nick Giberson) came on belatedly to take third, beaten 3 1/2 lengths.
Unraced as a 2 year old, Steamin Rosie was on the fair circuit in Illinois and Wisconsin throughout the summer in her first season of racing before shipping to Iowa late last month where the filly collected a win, a second and a third for trainer David Glinter (Mineral Point, Wisc.), who shares ownership of the Vaporize offspring with fellow Wisconsin resident Milton Lee Zimmerman (Linden).
Steamin Rosie only had $4,510 earned in her first 12 starts before taking down the $6,250 winner’s share of the BG’s Abbie stake.
Fox Valley Shannon, the Du Quoin State Fair champion and the 5-2 morning line favorite in Thursday’s filly stake, was scratched due to sickness. (Maywood)
