Stga handles $52G on Stga

Bettors at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway were able to wager on the Thoroughbred races at nearby Saratoga Race Course for the very first time when that track opened Wednesday for the 2006 season, and they pushed $52,608 through the windows. Reports say about 500 people went to the harness track, avoiding the record crowd that gathered at the Thoroughbred track that is located about a mile away.

The harness track was able to simulcast the Thoroughbred signal after an agreement was reached with the New York Racing Association to trade the signal for the use of one of the barns at the harness site.

“We are happy with the crowd today,” Saratoga Gaming and Raceway vice president of racing Skip Carlson was quoted as saying. “When it's really, really hot, we'll do better.

“We want to get the in-and-out crowd,”' he added. “We don't want to take people away from the track. It's all about comfort and convenience.”

The Saratoga Thoroughbred racetrack drew a record crowd of 27,346 for its opening, about 1,500 people more than 2005. The on-track handle was a record $3,789,795, with the total handle of $15,533,207 also setting an all-time high.
