Stonebridge Capri ($15.20) scored an impressive upset victory at odds of 6-1 in capturing the $12,000 winners-over pace for mares Friday at Pompano Park.
Driven by Bruce Ranger, Stonebridge Capri shot to the lead from post three and was able to stuff race favorite Velvet Eileen (Wally Hennessey) into second place by the opening quarter mile in :27.1.
Leading the field to the half-mile pole in :57, Ranger kept Stonebridge Capri in command. After a :28.3 third quarter that went by the three-quarter marker in 1:25.1, Hennessey left the two-hole trip with Velvet Eileen as they started to mount a challenge against Stonebridge Capri. But Stonebridge Capri was not to be denied, as Velvet Eileen could not collar the race leader. But Wilma Hall (Kevin Wallis) came three wide from third place and nearly caught Stonebridge Capri, who had to kick in a :28 final quarter mile to hold on and win by a head in 1:53.1. Velvet Eileen was third. Trained by Jim McDonald and owned by the Macadream Stable of Ottawa, Canada, it was the fourth win this year for Stonebridge Capri, a 6-year-old mare by Island Fantasy from the Camluck mare WC Betina. Ranger led all drivers on the night with three winners. (Pompano)
