Storming to series victory

The Apaches Fame Pacing Series kicked off Friday night at Woodbine with Stormyway (1:53.1) and Natesgotagrin (1:54.1) winning $17,000 ( C ) splits.

Stormaway lived up to his name with a powerhouse victory. The son of Northern Luck took charge right from the start for driver Mark Megens and cut fractions of :27.2, :57.2 and 1:26.2 before jetting home in :26.4 with the lightly-raced youngster. Dodgeball (Luc Ouellette) finished two-lengths behind the winner while Noble Seelster (Mike Saftic) finished another five lengths back in third.

Stormaway is undefeated in three career starts for Dan Megens, who conditions the homebred for partners Jan Van Nest of Hamilton and Peter Caetano of Ancaster, On.

Natesgotagrin was used off the pace tactics to take the second division in a career-best mile for driver Mark MacDonald. The homebred son of Grinfromeartoear tracked the leaders from second-over before kicking home in :27.4 to win by 3 1/4 lengths over Alleluia Al (Ouellette) with Apaches Banker (Jack Moiseyev) another quarter-length back in third.

This was Natesgotagrin's second victory in just four career starts for trainer Jason Libby and owners Bill Dorssers of Blenheim and Allan & John Lockie of Zephyr, On.

The second leg of the Apaches Fame Pacing Series is scheduled for Friday, March 17 with the $56,200 final slated for Friday, March 24.
