Strangles case at Big M

The New Jersey Racing Commission has confirmed that one Standardbred horse stabled at the Meadowlands has strangles. No outbreak is feared at this time, and as per direction from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the afflicted horse has been isolated from other horses.



Horses which were in the same barn where the afflicted horse was diagnosed have also been kept separated from the general horse population. "The other horses in that particular barn have been permitted to train during off-peak hours when other horses are not on the track, but not race," added Tony Socci, assistant director for the New Jersey Racing Commission. "Those horses are being kept separate from other horses and monitored for two weeks, until May 30."



Socci added that the horse confirmed to have strangles had been vaccinated prior to shipping into the Meadowlands.
