The Ohio Selected Jug Sale got underway Monday night, Sept. 21, at the Eden Park Equestrian Complex near Delaware, and a large crowd of Buckeyes showed up to buy yearlings by some of the state’s most exciting sires in recent years. Offspring by Yankee Cruiser, Jailhouse Jesse and Pegasus Spur brought top prices and helped give the sale a strong $10,732 average for the opening session.
“The crowd was super,” said sale manager Randy Manges. “We had standing-room only, and I think they were there because we really had great quality this year. And we’ve got enough quality that the sale should hold up the second night too.”
Despite the announcement earlier Monday that the Ohio Supreme Court had ruled that placing video lottery terminals at the state’s racetracks requires a referendum, horsemen and owners showed they were in the game to play. Trainer Eric Hamlet bought a Nobleland Sam colt for $34,000 on behalf of owner Jerome Osborne. The colt is a full brother to $1 million winner Psiluvheartbreaker p,2, 1:55.3f; 1:59.3f.
Horseman Ron Randall had to bid $25,000 to take home hip 51, a colt by the trotting sire Pegasus Spur. The colt born in February is a half brother to Duxelles 3, 1:59.2f.
A couple of fillies by Yankee Cruiser were sold with bids of $20,000-plus. Hip 31, a half sister to Park It Ashley p,4, 1:53.3h, was bought with a bid of $27,000 from Winchester Baye Acres Inc. (Edward Telle). Hip 53, a full sister to Pretty Eyes p,3, 1:51.4, was hammerd down for $22,000.
In addition, several offspring by trotting sire Jailhouse Jesse brought bids of $15,000 or more. Trainer Danny Collins had the last bid on hip number at $19,500 and trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. bought hip 14 with a bid of $19,000.
