Eric Goodell and 70-1 Stylish Artist shocked the field in the $407,400 Mistletoe Shalee final Saturday afternoon at the Meadowlands with a 1:51 effort. Good News Lady and Greg Grismore, at 24-1, finished second while the favored entry of Thong and Tug River Princess came up empty in the stretch.

Happy Dreamer and Andy Miller controlled the pace early, leading the field to a :26.3 opening quarter. But Tug River Princess would soon take the top spot for John Campbell before being shuffled by Thong, driven by Tim Tetrick after a :53.4 half. The action didn’t stop on the backstretch as McArts N Crafts forced the issue heading to three quarters (1:22.2).

Rounding the turn, Good News Lady and Grismore were poised to strike racing first over. Goodell and Stylish Artist, sitting second over, followed before overtaking the Jimmy Takter-trained filly late in the stretch. Miss Scarlett and Brian Sears were third. The 3-5 entry finished up the track. Tug River Princess was seventh and Thong raced ninth.

The victory was the first of the season for Stylish Artist. The sophomore Artsplace filly is trained by Monte Gelrod. The winning time established a new lifetime mark, and pushed Stylish Artist’s earnings to over $715,000. She paid a whopping $147.80 in victory.
