Kurt Sugg came into Monday's card at Northfield with a decent chance to pick up his 1,000th career win. After all, he had 998 victories heading into the day. But nobody, not even Kurt, could have predicted the way he would accomplish the feat. Sugg won a total of five races on the 14-race card, including the first three of the night. Sugg replaced a delayed Aaron Merriman in the first race and steered Calvin Lamb's Queenie's Lil Bit ($4.60) to victory 999, and then hit number 1,000 with Aden Miller's Dayon Dreamer ($10.80) in the second. The Sugg Double paid $38.40. Sugg got started on his second thousand with Ben's Big Bird ($13.40) in the third, and later won with Ayers Ray Ratliff's Flying Flicka ($4.40) and Sarah Young's Beach Believer ($5.40). Ironically, the trainer-driver scored all five wins on catch-drives. Leading driver Merriman arrived, albeit late, to pick up five wins as well. (Northfield Park)
