Sulky breaks at Big M

Driver Ron Pierce escaped injury when his sulky collapsed at the Meadowlands Wednesday night during the 12th and final race on the program. Pierce, who was riding in an AdvantEdge sulky he owned, took a seat on the sloppy track when the bike gave way at about the eighth pole in the stretch drive.

“It was one of the bikes that had not been reinforced. It just buckled on the right side of the seat,” said Pierce. “For some reason, I was under the impression it had went in the shop. I talked to Tom Harmer (head of the sulky company) and we both determined that it had been overlooked (during a previous recall).”

Pierce said he felt the sulky begin to give way and was able to pull up his mount, the pacing mare Twin B Goddess.

“Lucky for me we had mud aprons on and it kind of held the bike together,” said Pierce. “And nobody was right on me, so I wasn’t worried about getting hit.”
