A field of eight assembled Wednesday for the first preliminary round of Indiana Sire Stakes competition for freshman colt trotters. When favorite Bar One broke stride behind the gate in the $15,000 event it opened the door for third choice Sunny Ben Joe to claim victory in a time of 2:03.3. Sunny Ben Joe, starting to Bar One’s outside in post six, got away fourth for driver Mark O’Mara. The duo bided their time there as JL Track A Tack (Charlie Conrad) took command before being shuffled by LW Dandycoy and Walter Haynes Jr. O’Mara pulled the gelded son of Super Ben Joe after the half (1:01) and advanced to third by the three-quarter-mile marker (1:33). In the stretch the Alvin Miller trainee trotted home in :30.1 to win by nearly two lengths. LW Dandycoy (Prague) finished second and DM Dakota Image (Dakota Spur) was third. Sunny Ben Joe, out of Balanced Image mare Tequila Sunshine, is owned by Lee Brook Farms of New Jersey. He was bred by Jacob Schwartz.
