Super Bowl series underway; handle up again

Return Home
January 10, 2013 | Print View

The popular Super Bowl series for trotters got underway Thursday night at the Meadowlands with four divisions making up the first leg. Coming into the series, it appeared that Andy and Julie Miller held a strong hand and the night produced mixed results for "Team Orange Crush.”

One of the Miller trainees, Windsun Galliano, made a break at the start, allowing Joyeaux Dream to go all the way on the lead, winning by three lengths in 1:55.4 for Tim Tetrick. But soon after, Helios would prevail for Andy and Julie Miller, holding off the fast closing No Less than Magic, winning in 1:55.3 (the fastest of the four divisions).

The first division of the night went to the very impressive Where To Hanover, who grinded his way into the race, chased down the longshot leaders and drew clear to a convincing victory, winning by four lengths in 1:55.4.

The final division was captured by Wisenheimer, prevailing by a nose after a fierce stretch battle with Take It To None. The win was one of three on the night for driver Dave Miller and was a popular win for trainer Jenny Melander, who won two under saddle races in 2012.

On the wagering front, make it six race dates in the books, with all six race dates showing gains from the previous year. The Thursday night card generated a total handle of $1,837,170, an increase of 5.4% from the same Thursday night in 2012.

Racing resumes Friday, featuring The Clyde Hirt Series for pacers with post time at 7:15 P.M. For more information, go to meadowlandsracetrack.com. (Meadowlands)
