Supreme Victor dominates at Maywood

Supreme Victor passed his first Maywood Park test in flying colors with a dominating 7 3/4-length victory in Thursday night’s $12,500 Life’s A Holiday stake for state-bred 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings.

Nicely rated by driver Sam Widger, Supreme Victor dashed out from the one slot, grabbed control, and when he was never seriously threaten, proved to be much the best in his fifth start for trainer Brett Wilfong, who acquired the gelded son of Valley Victor out of the Noble Hustle dam Miss Noble Hustle a little more than a month ago (Sept. 21).

The 7-2 second betting favorite pulled away from the 4-5 favorite Maxter (Ryan Anderson), who had dead aim on Supreme Victor most of the way but ended up a distant second on this night, almost two lengths better than the show horse Fox Valley Summit who was beaten 9 1/2 lengths.

“This trotter has got a lot of go,” said winning driver Widger. “He’s a strong horse and he gets around these half-mile turns real well but you do have to keep his mind focused during a race. I didn’t know what to expect in his first Maywood start but I knew that Brett (trainer Wilfong) would have him ready to go so I wanted to get a real good shot, and he responded.”

After a :29.2 first quarter, the winner was able to get a very soft :31.2 second panel and the 1:00.3 half-mile time was followed with a :29.2 third quarter. Supreme Victor finished in :29 flat without any urging.

“They didn’t really come at him so he kind of had things his own way (on the front-end) but he did come home really well, added Widger.

Supreme Victor does have plenty of small track experience, spending all of the summer (11 of his 19 first season starts) on the Illinois fair circuit when he was raced out of the barns of trainers Jamaica Patton and Eddie Patton Jr. He was unraced as a freshman. (Maywood Park)
