On Wednesdaay night Blue York Yankee and Surtees Hanover won the two elimination races for the Peter Haughton Memorial final, winning by comfortable margins. Blue York Yankee, a colt by Muscles Yankee, rallied from off the pace to score in 1:58 while Surtees Hanover took control of his elim early and later hit the wire first in 1:57.3.

Brian Sears drove Blue York Yankee to the score for trainer Trond Smedshammer. The colt was bred by Perretti Farms and is owned by Einari Vidgren of Finalnd. Blue York Yankee was sold as a yearling for $180,000. He's out of the top filly Vernon Blue Chip.

Also advancing from Blue York Yankee's elimination were Nautical Notion, Keystone Blitz, Celebrity Rocky and Tapas Bar. Make It Happen, the early pacesetter and second betting choice, finished seventh and failed to qualify.

Surtees Hanover remained undefeated in four career starts with his score in the second Haughton elim. Bob Rosenheim, who also owns first elim finalist Keystone Blitz, bought Surtees Hanover for $77,000 as a yearling. The colt by Andover Hall is trained by Jonas Czernyson.

Dave Palone, who has now driven Surtees Hanover to three of his four victories, put him on the point before the first quarter was reached and then yielded to Roger Hammer and Muscles Rule, a 40-1 shot. Just past the half Palone tipped out and his colt quickly stepped by Muscles Rule and the race was effectively over. His final time of 1:57.3 is a new lifetime best.

Also advancing to the final from the second elim were Credit Press, First Pleasurelane, Credit As and Ocean Front.
