Lord Capar, the top European 2-year-old of 2007, beat Surtees Hanover at the Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm on Wednesday night. Lord Capar, a son of Varenne, was timed in a mile rate of 2:02.1 over the 2,140 meters.

Lord Capar started from post three with Swedish driving ace Orjan Kihlstrom in the sulky. He trotted to the lead and was followed by Surtees Hanover, driven by Hans Owe Sundberg, who briefly challenged before tucking in at the pylons. Go D Samara finished second while Surtees Hanover held on for third.

Surtees Hanover, a 3-year-old son of Andover Hall, was purchased by Tommy Jacobsson's Stall Zenith last fall. Stall Zenith also owns Giant Diablo.

Surtees Hanover was trained by Jonas Czernyson until the sale, when Roger Walmann took over conditioning duties.

The race against Lord Capar was the first of the season for Surtees Hanover. Walmann raced Surtees Hanover conversatively, putting heavier shoes on the colt and adding a head cap when he showed a little too much aggression in his warm-ups.

Lord Capar, a son of Varenne-Foxy'n Rowdy, won 10 of 13 starts last year, highlighted by the Piero Biondi Memorial, a prestigious Italian criterium.
