The most important stakes in Sweden at the one-mile sprinter distance, the Sprintermästaren, was raced Thursday night at the Halmstad track on the sunny Swedish west coast. It had three eliminations which were won by Sebastian K, You Bet Hornline and Select Yankee. Select Yankee was the fastest winner in 1:53.4.
The final turned out to be a thrilling event even though initially it looked like Sebastian K would win for Lutfi Kolgjini as Ake Svanstedt decided to challenge them with Select Yankee after the first quarter. Select Yankee, a son of Muscles Yankee, was strong and edged to the front, but was beaten by You Bet Hornline, who found room on the inside in the homestretch. The final time was 1:54.1.
You Bet Hornline, a son of San Pellegrino, was driven by Robert Bergh, who chose to stay along the pylons inside of going for a third-over trip. It took a little maneuvering to find room, but Bergh managed to get the job done without the judges finding that he had violated any rules.
You Bet Hornline earned 100,000 euros with his victory in the final. It was the second Sprintermästar win for Bergh, who scored in 2006 with Fantasy Broline (General November).--By Lars G. Palm
