Sweet Alabama swept past an off stride Apecs in mid stretch and cruised to a 1:57 victory in the $48,000 Hayes memorial 2-year-old filly trot Thursday night at the Du Quoin State Fair. Entrymate Sheer Soul was second and Rhonda T, who broke stride at the start, rallied to be third.
David Miller was in the bike as Sweet Alabama picked up cover behind Apecs and Andy Miller around the last turn. Apecs appeared to be on her way to victory when she broke stride in the stretch, handing Sweet Alabama her second win of the season in three starts. The Self Possessed colt pulled from the three hole after the five-eighths pole, moved beside the leading Biz Hub and Andy Miller at the top of the lane and pulled away for his second straight win in three starts. Trainer Ron Gurfein co-owns the colt with Jerry and Rosalie Silva.
