A pair of Chuck Sylvester trainees, both from the first crop of the ill-fated Windsong’s Legacy, swept the New Jersey Futurities for 2-year-old trotters on Wednesday at Freehold Raceway. In the $35,000 event for fillies, Southwind Wasabi, driven by John Campbell, won while Lou’s Legacy extended his winning streak to four in the $35,000 open division with Jim Marshall III in the sulky.  Sylvester also harnessed the runner-up in the open division, the Muscles Yankee filly One Tough Girl.

Southwind Wasabi ($5.40) rallied for a 1 1/4-length victory over Rapsong with 4 1/2 lengths back to Sugarcane Yankee in third.  It was a sweep by daughters of Windsong’s Legacy.

Southwind Wasabi, who is out of the Pine Chip mare Winky’s Star and was bred by Southwind Farm of New Jersey, trotted the mile in 1:59.2, picking up her second win with three seconds in seven starts.  She has banked $57,390 for the ownership of Chuck Sylvester of Williamstown, N.J., Neal Goldman of Washington Township, N.J., and Margaret K. Dey of Allentown, N.J.

Lou’s Legacy, owned and bred by Mal and Janet Burroughs LLC of Westwood, N.J., added the Futurity to his victories this year in the Harold Dancer final and the New Jersey Sire Stakes–Green Acres final.  He trotted a career best of 1:58.3 for the mile.

Lou’s Legacy ($3.60) finished a length ahead of One Tough Girl, and it was four lengths to American Journey, a son of Muscles Yankee, in third.

This was the colt’s fifth win with two seconds in seven tries and pushed his earnings to $92,750, all in New Jersey-sired restricted racing at Freehold.

The Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey sponsors the stakes which are restricted to New Jersey-sired horses. (SBOANJ)
