September 18, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey (SBOANJ) is joining with the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NJTHA), Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey (TBANJ) and the Rutgers University Equine Science Center and representatives from the pleasure horse community to sponsor the first New Jersey Horse Industry Symposium on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Monmouth Park in Oceanport.

An estimated 200 people from the various horse racing groups and members of the State Legislature have been invited to the event, which will feature presentations from State Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce, Secretary of Agriculture Charles Kuperus, State Commerce Commissioner Virginia Bauer and the chairs of the two legislative committees that deal with racing and wagering legislation, State Senator Barbara Buono and Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew.

Other speakers will include: Dennis Dowd, senior vice president of racing at the Meadowlands; SBOANJ Vice President Thomas A. D’Altrui; Philip Kirschner, president of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, and other members of the State Legislature, including Assemblyman Ronald S. Dancer, a career horseman and son of the late Hall of Famer Stanley Dancer.

This marks the first time that all aspects of the state’s equine industry have united to spotlight the importance of the industry to the state and the financial needs in order to compete with neighboring states that have slot machines to bolster purses and breeding funds.

Topics will include “The Importance of Working Together;” the Economic Impact of Racing on New Jersey’s Horse Industry, Traditional Agriculture, Commerce and Tourism;” and, “The Importance of being Involved in the Legislative Process.” SBOA/New Jersey press release)
