Taking advantage of a break in deep stretch by Brighten up, Tahiti Springs went on to a 2:00.1 victory in the lone $50,000 division of the Standardbred for 2-year-old filly trotters Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds.
Driven by Dave Palone, Tahiti Springs sat third as the John Campbell-driven Brighten Up led through fractions of :29.2, 1:00.2 and 1:30.1. Palone moved his charge up to the outside around the final turn to take on the leader, but it appeared she wouldn't be able to go on by. But Brighten up lost her gait in the final strides, allowing Palone and Tahiti Springs to take the victory.
The stewards reviewed the finish of the race but kept Brighten Up's number second, with Broader Ambition third.
Trained by Rick Beinhauer, who shares ownership with Regina Beinhauer, Tahiti Springs won for the first time in nine career starts. The daughter of Dream Vacation came into the race with three seconds as her best finishes, and earnings of $8,480.
