Trainer Jimmy Takter and driver Ron Pierce combined to win both $100,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Premier Division Championships for 2-year-old trotters Wednesday afternoon at Freehold Raceway.

Costa Rica, a daughter of Muscles Yankee, won the championship final for 2-year-old trotting fillies in 1:58.3 with a strong move that began on the backstretch and concluded with a 1 1/4-length win over Photogenic Legs (Classic Photo). Third place went to Boinga (Windsong’s Legacy).

It was the fifth victory in seven career starts for the filly, whose earnings rose to $327,230 with the $50,000 winner’s share of the NJSS purse. Costa Rica, bred by Perretti Farms in Cream Ridge, N.J., is owned by Christina Takter of East Windsor, N.J., and John and Jim Fielding of Toronto, Canada.

Pierce was also in the sulky for Takter winning the $100,000 NJSS Championship for 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings with Senor Glide, scoring his first career victory.

The son of Yankee Glide took the lead at the three-quarter pole and drew off to win by two lengths over Take My Picture (Classic Photo). Finishing third was Mamas Boo Bear (Muscles Yankee).

Senor Glide had been second in three of his six previous starts before notching his first victory in 1:59.3, boosting his lifetime earnings to $70,837 with the $50,000 winner’s share of the purse. The winning owners were Christina Takter, John Fielding and Fred W. Hertrich III of Seaford, Del., who also bred the colt. (NJSS)
