Breeders Crown eliminations for 2 year olds will go postward Friday night at the Meadowlands with the 3 year olds taking to the track Saturday, but on Friday morning several eligibles who didn't have races this weekend competed in qualifiers at the Big M, including Lantern Kronos and new driver John Campbell.
Lantern Kronos romped home a 13-length winner in 1:56.3 with Campbell aboard for the first time. Trainer Jimmy Takter had been behind the 3-year-old filly trotter but changed to the Hall of Famer for the Breeders Crown.
"It's the Meadowlands and John is one of the best drivers in the sport. We need all the advantage we can get," Takter told harnessracing.com Friday afternoon. "She looked very good today; she likes the big tracks."
Lantern Kronos has won 12 of 17 starts this year with $914,854 in earnings. She trotted her career best while winning a Bluegrass division at The Red Mile in 1:52.3. Also included among her dozen victories is the World Filly Trotting Derby and the Elegantimage. She was the runner-up in the $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks at the Meadowlands in early August.
Other Crown hopefuls winning qualifiers Friday were 3-year-old colt trotters Celebrity Secret and Cloud Casino (the 3-year-old colt trot did not need eliminations) and 3-year-old colt pacer Dali (who received a bye into next week's final).
