Tasmanian Daniel wins Yonkers feature

Return Home
January 24, 2009 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Tasmanian Daniel lasted on the Saturday night lead, winning Yonkers Raceway's $31,000 Open  Handicap Pace in a hard-fought 1:54.2.

With Larry Stalbaum taking his customary seat for owner-trainer Kim Asher, "Daniel" left from post position four. He stepped around Noble's  Grand Slam (Greg Grismore), grabbing the throttle before a :27.2 opening quarter-mile. He then found a :57.3 intermission and 1:25.3 three-quarters, all the while dealing with a first-up 2-1 favorite Rare Jewel (Ryan Anderson).

Tasmanian Daniel dispatched of that one, taking a length-and-a-half lead into the payoff portion. He then engaged in a two-pronged lane duel, beating  Noble's Grand Slam by a head and Up Front Peyton (Brent Holland) by a neck.

Rare Jewel and Print It (Jeff Gregory) grabbed the small change, while JP Jackpot (Stephane Bouchard), who won last week's $60,000 Dominic Frinzi  Invitational, was a non-factor sixth from this week's eight hole.

Tasmanian Daniel paid $7.50 (second choice) for his first win in three seasomal starts.

After three fruitless weeks across the river, "Daniel" has two consecutive local victories and five wins (with four thirds) in nine Westchester work nights. (Yonkers)
