Tbeds heading to Cal Expo?

Tuesday's Sacramento Bee is reporting that harness racing may be on its way out at Cal Expo and Thoroughbred racing in after the current harness lease expires in July 2008. With Bay Meadows Thoroughbred racetrack recently announcing it was closing in November after a request for a two-year delay in installing the new Polytrack surface, interest has risen in shifting those dates to Cal Expo.

Cal Expo's harness horsemen are currently negotiating with the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo to race at that site. However, the facility would need major renovations to conduct a year-long harness meet.

Cal Expo had previously announced its plans to host a two-week Thoroughbred meet in 2008. The track is currently limited by law to 14 days of Thoroughbred racing, so it would need legislative approval for any expansion. They would also be required to install the Polytrack synthetic surface.

"(Cal Expo officials) see a unique opportunity for them as far as Thoroughbred business is concerned," California Harness Horsemen's Association president Ben Kenney told the Bee. "We talked about every possible scenario."
