Besides being one of the premier trainers in the Standardbred industry, George Teague Jr. is a special guy. He must be to take time out of his busy schedule to travel once again to Monticello Raceway to participate in the track's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pace next Tuesday.
The event is not only staged to honor the memory of the great civil rights leader, but to also showcase the talents of the African-American drivers.
Though Teague has gained national acclaim with his training prowess, on Tuesday he’ll jump up on the driver's seat and take a perch behind a spirited steed and compete against seven others in the Dr. King Pace. “For years Monticello Raceway has been paying respect to the memory of Dr. King with a race in his honor and though I wanted to participate in the past I never was able to find the time until last season,” Teague said. “And though I finished third last year it was still a lot of fun.” During the 2007 campaign, Teague’s only pari-mutuel drive was in the Dr. King Pace, but from 71 qualifying races he won 33 of them. “Hey it’s easy to win when you drive the likes of Western Ace, Total Truth, Danae and Mattdultery in qualifying races,” Teague joked. “I was just tuning them up for the sport's top catch-drivers who handle the driving chores when we go for the dough.” Teague, who has developed such champions as Rainbow Blue, Isabella Blue Chip, Western Ace, Total Truth, Future Destiny, Artcotic and Southwind Lynx, will take time out from his busy schedule to travel to the Mighty M for the event which features the talents of African-American harness drivers. Teague, who counts former Heavyweight Boxing Champion George Foreman among his patrons, is currently conditioning 87 head in Delaware. Last year Teague’s stable won 116 races and amassed purses of $5,930,001, including those started by his sister, Brenda, in Canada. (with files from Monticello)
