Teague says Badlands Nitro's year over, retired to Winbak

As announced last month, Badlands Nitro is retiring to the breeding shed at Winbak Farm of New York, with the 3-year-old son of Badlands Hanover having made his final start of his career Nov. 9 at Dover Downs where he finished third in the Progress Pace final.

A winner of more than $1.4 million in 2008 and more than $1.5 million for his career, Badlands Nitro won the Hempt, Art Rooney and the Battle of the Brandywine but has been dealing with minor sickness and allergies, leading owner John Celii and co-owner and trainer George Teague Jr. to make the decision to stop racing him.

“Nitro has been fighting allergies and some slight sickness since the Little Brown Jug, and has not been 100 percent since. It’s disappointing we cannot race in other stake engagements but he has far proven himself to be an outstanding individual, and we need to do what is best for him,” stated Teague.
